It's plastic-free July and we, at Rockingham Centre, have identified a few ways we can all easily do our part to keep our planet beautiful.
Bring your old batteries to Coles & Woolworths for recycling! Recycling batteries is crucial for the environment as they contact toxic materials which can contaminate soil and groundwater if disposed incorrectly.
Clean and non-ripped clothing items can be donated to Save the Children Rockingham. Save the Children is a charity organisation which primarily focus on sponsoring children for 5 – 10 years all around the world. Donating clothes and good-condition household items to be sold in their op-shop not only saves those items from going to landfill, but also helps them raise much needed funds for the organisation.
Drop off your small consumer electronics and home appliances such as laptops, tablets, monitors, headphones, hair dryers, stick vaccums and blenders, to JB Hi-Fi! For more information on what you can or cannot recycle at JB please visit JB Hi-FI's website.
Plus, with JB Hi-Fi Trade-In you can swap your eligible devices for a JB Hi-Fi gift card or a new device! Click her to find out more.
If you have some old reading or prescription glasses, including sunglasses, that you don’t need anymore, bring them to Specs 241 or Specsavers to be recycled! If you wear contacts, Specsavers also collects disposable contact lens cases.
TreadLightly & Rebel Sport recycle sports balls to help reduce the millions of balls that end up in landfill each year. Since 2022, the sports balls program (formerly Game On) collected 35 tonnes of tennis balls, rackets, inflatable sports balls and snow sports equipment. Ready to recycle your used sports balls? Clean them, place them in a bag or box and drop them off to Rebel.
TreadLightly is a national recycling initiative that takes unwanted sport and active lifestyle footwear and responsibly recycles it here in Australia to give it new life. Simply place your unwanted footwear in one of TreadLightly’s collection units located at Rebel or The Athlete’s Foot.
Are you a client of Insight Training?
The store provides recycling opportunities including bread tags, can openers and cans to their staff and clients. So if you are a client, hold on to those and bring them over on your next visit!
In addition, Rockingham Centre is committed to recycle as much of the centre’s waste as possible. Currently, the centre recycles 46% of its total waste each month, including...
· 21 tonnes of cardboard
· 14 tonnes of organic waste
· 3.5 tonnes of plastics and other mix-recycling items
Recycling bins have been introduced to our newly refreshed Fresh Food mall, and will be rolled out to the rest of the centre at a later date, which is expected to increase Rockingham Centre’s recycling stats.
The centre uses annual NABERS (https://www.nabers.gov.au/) Ratings to track its sustainability and identify areas for savings and improvement. Rockingham Centre’s NABERS Ratings, valid until April 2026 are:
